Airvana Introduces All-in-One Wireless Solution for Small Business Locations

Innovative S1000 TD-LTE plus Wi-Fi small cell enables universal managed wireless service
May 18, 2015 CHELMSFORD, Mass.
Airvana, a leading provider of small cell solutions, today announced the S1000, a 2.5-GHz TD-LTE small cell with integrated Wi-Fi for small and mid-size business locations. The S1000 allows operators to cost-effectively densify their wireless networks, improving network speed and capacity in difficult-to-serve high usage locations, while offloading their macro networks.

Over five million business locations in the U.S.[1] – and many more globally – are in spaces of 50,000 square feet (5,000 square meters) or smaller. These include branch offices, retail stores, restaurants and light industrial facilities. Quality wireless service is critical to these businesses to ensure worker productivity and satisfaction of visiting customers, and to support mobile-enabled commerce. The S1000 is scaled and featured exactly for small business, complementing Airvana’s existing OneCell LTE solution for larger locations.

TD-LTE is deployed at high frequencies that do not easily penetrate building walls, driving the need for an indoor solution. Furthermore, the S1000’s circuit-switched fallback (CSFB) and voice over LTE (VoLTE) capabilities enable voice support for both legacy voice and new VoLTE devices.

In addition to TD-LTE, the S1000 offers state-of-the-art 802.11ac dual-band, dual-concurrent Wi-Fi to deliver high data rate performance for the latest user devices. The S1000 Wi-Fi supports private access for small business employees and public access for visitors. Similar to Hotspot 2.0, a mobile operator’s subscribers can transparently authenticate on Wi-Fi, automatically offloading them onto a secure, high performance Wi-Fi connection.

“Airvana’s S1000 addresses many requirements set by operators and venue owners,” said Dimitris Mavrakis, Principal Analyst at Ovum. “Airvana’s OneCell, being multi-operator, can solve large enterprise and venue-owner needs while S1000 provides technology flexibility for smaller businesses and venues. Ovum considers the capabilities of Airvana’s products to be vital for the evolution of the enterprise and SMB small cell market.”

Airvana’s hybrid self-organizing-network (H-SON) capabilities ensure smooth coexistence with operators’ macro networks, as well as neighboring small cells. Airvana’s Device Management System (DMS) centralized SON functions work in tandem with the local SON algorithms of the S1000 to automatically configure hundreds of parameters based on location and operator-specified policies. This eliminates the need for on-site technical staff, making high volume deployments economically viable. The DMS manages Airvana small cells, including OneCell, to give operators a single management point for large-scale small cell networks across small, medium, and large businesses and public venues.

“Small business locations have been under-served by traditional wireless solutions,” said Rod Gatehouse, vice president of marketing and product management, Airvana. “The S1000 provides an operator-managed all-in-one wireless solution perfect for businesses looking to have the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi and LTE technology. Because of the DMS, Airvana small cells are entirely plug-and-play and easy to manage, dramatically driving down the total cost of ownership.”

The S1000 is available now globally for operator trials and evaluation.
