Andrew Launches Next-Gen Solutions For Enabling Location-Capable Digital Networks

--New Capabilities for Locating Callers in an Era of Evolving Networks--
July 21, 2009 HICKORY, N.C.

Andrew Solutions, the CommScope, Inc., division that is a global leader in wireless communications systems and products, has introduced its next generation of solutions for enabling location-capable networks, including new technologies and options that help communications carriers stay ahead of customer demand for location applications.

This new generation of Andrew’s geolocation enabled solutions offers cost efficiencies, capacity and algorithm enhancements, and greater technology integration in helping carriers address commercial and regulatory applications (such as information, security and emergency 911 and 112) in an era of rapidly evolving networks, devices and customer usage requirements.

“As our customers’ networks evolve, so does Andrew’s capabilities to support them with next generation location technologies and solutions,” said John Baker, vice president and general manager, Network Solutions, Andrew. “The rapid adoption of IP technologies in networks, along with consumers’ growing use of smartphones and advanced data applications, has quickly elevated the need for networks that are location-enabled. We believe we have created the best solution for carriers to address their needs today and in the future.”

These new capabilities and technologies will join Andrew’s existing geolocation solutions under a new brand—GeoLENs™ (GeoLocation-Enabled Network solutions).

GeoLENs Evolves with Next Generation Networks

Since its first installations in 2001 for E911 mobile caller location, Andrew has been a leader in providing innovative, reliable caller location solutions for wireless networks. Today, Andrew’s GeoLENs is a complete portfolio focused on location-enabling public wireless, wired broadband, internet service provider, and enterprise and government IP networks, placing the capability of locating devices into the network. Andrew wireless location systems can apply various locating technologies, including handset-based, network-based and hybrid location methods, to meet public safety and commercial location-based service requirements.

Highlights of the new GeoLENs family include:

  • Release of Andrew’s new platform architecture for digital wireless networks, with capabilities for today’s location requirements and next generation networks such as LTE and WiMAX. Unlike location methods such as uplink time difference of arrival (U-TDOA) used to support yesterday’s voice-centric networks, integrated location solutions using multiple technologies—such as A-GPS, enhanced cell identity (E-CID) and range estimators—are required for the digital networks of today and tomorrow. Andrew provides the platforms that integrate these solutions with the deployed networks of today and future-proof carriers’ investments by providing for future growth of these types of location services.

Andrew’s next generation platform reduces, onto a single footprint, the processing capacity and interfaces that previously have been deployed in four-times that amount of space. The GeoLENs platform also encompasses new software releases, including operational support software and new location algorithms for E911, E112 and commercial applications with support for the existing and next generation of Sun Netra processors.
  • Introduction of a new and innovative location technology, called Multiple Range Estimation Location (MREL), which meets or exceeds the performance metrics offered by other high-accuracy technologies, such as U-TDOA, in most environments. The patent-pending MREL will be ideal for mobile operators that are supporting US E911 Phase II requirements, commercial location-based services and security applications.

“As a world leader in caller location solutions, Andrew has continually invested strategically in location technologies research and development in order to help mobile operators and carriers create new revenue streams and address their customers’ requirements,” said Baker. “With the continued evolution of digital networks, whether wired or wireless, we believe Andrew is best positioned to support communications carriers around the world with location-enabled networks.”

Complete Location Platform for Wireless and Wireline

With GeoLENs, Andrew offers a complete hybrid platform for integrating location technologies and techniques for both wireless and wireline networks. The GeoLENs family is comprised of:

  • GeoLENs Mobile Location Center (MLC)—GeoLENs MLC can location-enable wireless networks of all kinds for applications such as E911 and E112, commercial location-based services, security and more. Andrew's GeoLENs MLC is one of the world's most versatile mobile location platforms. As no single wireless location technique can meet the needs of all location-enhanced applications, the MLC system bridges the gap between location-enhanced services and the location technologies that enable them by providing the capability to implement any or all wireless locating techniques.

GeoLENs Mobile Location Center supports handset-based, network-based, and hybrid locating technologies—cell identity, A-GPS, E-CID, U-TDOA on the traffic channel, MREL and angle of arrival (AOA)—individually or in combination, on a common platform. GeoLENs gives operators the flexibility to add or refocus their location system as their needs change and as market directions clarify. While most vendors offer operators a system with one or two locating techniques, Andrew offers an all-inclusive, flexible system that is designed to provide thelocation capacity, throughput and support for all present applications and is designed to be adaptable for future applications.
  • GeoLENs Location Information Server (LIS) – GeoLENs LIS can location-enable IP-based networks to support all location-sensitive applications. The GeoLENs LIS can be deployed in access networks ranging from enterprise, DSL, cable and other wired and wireless broadband access types to provide the location of any device connected to an IP network.

“As more IP networks are deployed, especially within enterprise applications, location in the fixed network is of equal importance to location in the mobile network,” Baker said. “Our GeoLENs system is evolving to support these new applications for both carrier and enterprise networks in a way that others currently cannot.”
