CommScope Introduces New Fiber Optic Pavement Cable

Patent-pending Design Reduces Installation Cost and Construction Time
June 21, 2006 HICKORY, N.C.

CommScope, Inc. (NYSE: CTV), a world leader in cable and connectivity solutions, today introduced a new fiber optic Pavement Cable specifically designed to reduce installation costs and construction time. It can be used by MSOs to deploy fiber to commercial, residential and small-to-mid-sized businesses, and it is also designed for enterprise applications such as metropolitan and campus sidewalks, roadways and parking lots.

Available in up to 72-fiber count, CommScope's fiber optic pavement cable utilizes a gel-filled central tube cable encased in a smooth-wall, welded copper armor that provides it with enhanced fiber protection and water blocking characteristics. The product is rugged in design with excellent crush resistance and thermal stability while providing tensile performance compatible with standard micro-trenching techniques. Since sharp edges are minimized, it also provides fiber protection during cable access and termination.

The Pavement Cable's unique, patent-pending design allows an installation method that can substantially reduce disruption of day-to-day traffic at the installation site since it requires only a 10 mm wide by 8 cm deep groove to be cut into a sidewalk, roadway, or parking lot. The pavement cable is placed at the bottom of the slot and held in place by a closed-cell, foamed backer rod. The opening is then easily sealed with common, commercially available hot sealant, roofing tar or caulking, depending upon the surface.

"We believe our new pavement cable's installation method is a significant improvement over more costly and time-consuming directional boring and trenching techniques used in the past when an aerial installation of a fiber drop was impractical," said Brian Garrett, CommScope's President and COO. "Our fiber optic pavement cable is another example of our commitment to provide cost effective, commercial access solutions to our MSO and enterprise customers."
