Low Count Fiber Drop Cable from CommScope: Designed for True One or Two Fiber Drop Applications

November 15, 2011 HICKORY, N.C.

CommScope, Inc., a global leader in infrastructure solutions for communications networks, has launched a unique and cost-effective fiber optic cable solution—the Low Count Fiber Drop cable—designed specifically for true one or two fiber drop applications in FTTx networks.

The Low Count Fiber Drop cable, part of the company’s expanding portfolio of high-performance, high-bandwidth cables for telecommunications applications, provides cable and multi-services operators the flexibility of deploying a fiber optic cable designed specifically for the drop portion of a network.

“FTTx cables can be used in various architectural approaches to outside plant designs,” said Doug Wells, vice president, Outside Plant Solutions, CommScope. “Some operators are using expensive fiber optic drop cables, containing up to 12 fibers that were designed to accommodate various applications that extend way beyond the true drop application. The Low Count Fiber Drop is a design uniquely focused on addressing the specific requirements in the tap to subscriber connection.

“CommScope has a rich history in the cable industry. Through our years of research and development on fiber optic cable, we think CommScope is uniquely positioned to help operators deploy a fiber drop cable to address both aerial and underground conduit drop applications.”

The Low Count Fiber Drop cable is a small (4 mm × 2 mm) lightweight (8 lbs per 1,000 ft) cable designed for easy handling and field preparations. The all-dielectric Low Count Fiber Drop cable also eliminates the time and cost associated with bonding and grounding. The innovative, gel-free solution fulfills this niche in the FTTx architecture.

The Low Count Fiber Drop cable was also designed to complement and further enhances the value of CommScope’s BrightPath® Optical Solutions (BOS™). With a full suite of headend, outside plant and end-user solutions, BOS allows an operator to choose the right technology and architecture to meet the unique needs of residential, MDU, commercial and cellular backhaul applications.

BrightPath is a registered trademark and BOS is a trademark of CommScope, Inc.
