WESTCHESTER, IL, January 30, 2008—Optus, an Australian leader in integrated
telecommunications, has selected Andrew Wireless Solutions, the CommScope, Inc.subsidiary
that is a global leader in communications systems and products, to design, install
and commission an in-building wireless mobile communication infrastructure system
at its new head office in Macquarie Park, Sydney.
“With the new campus serving more than 6,000 Optus staff, it's key for the
facility to have an effective and efficient wireless system for seamless communications,”
said Jon Wilkie, director of corporate services, Singtel Optus. “Andrew's products
for in-building mobile coverage and capacity will provide our people with highly
reliable communications that enable them to communicate, interact and work anywhere
within the campus.”
The system uses the Andrew Intelligent Optical Network (ION™) series, an
industry-leading optical distribution system for carrying radio signals loss-free
over fiber optics. The ION-B system is designed to include 75 dual band remote
units to extend and enhance coverage across a total building area of 84,000
square meters at the new campus.
The system has 14 UMTS sectors running high-speed downlink packet access
(HSDPA) and six GSM sectors to cover the wide and densely populated area and
address any multi-band, multi-carrier applications. The system is also capable
of transporting frequencies from 800 megahertz (MHz) to 2500 MHz regardless
of protocol and modulation.
“Optus and Andrew have been working together for many years. The relationship
has taken a significant step forward with the delivery of this in-building coverage
and capacity system, one of the largest systems of its kind in Australia,” said
Matt Melester, vice president, Wireless Innovations Business Operations, Andrew.
“Both companies have worked closely to ensure that the solution will work for
today's needs as well as into the future.”
The Andrew ION-B remote units, available in different power levels and frequency
combinations, are connected to a master unit collocated with the base station
up to three kilometers away. The remote units are future proof due to their
ability to transport radio frequencies regardless of protocol and modulation.
In addition, the automatic gain control feature of ION-B reduces design, installation
and optimization time.
Making its first footprint in Asia Pacific in 1967, Andrew now employs more
than 3,600 people in the region with sales offices in almost every country in
Asia Pacific.
