SpanMaster 3.1a Cabledat revision 051005 First-time User Overview SpanMaster 3.1a (For Windows 95/NT 4.0) consists of 7 screens that may be selected by clicking on the tabs at the bottom of the program window. You may select the tabs in any order. Most problems will be solved by selecting the tabs in a left to right order. >>>> First Screen 'Project ID' Several fields are provided for entry of descriptive information that will appear on any desired printer reports. None of the data is used for any calculations. >>>> Second Screen 'Cables' All cable selections are made here. Another set of tabs located in the upper right side groups the cables. The 'Strand' tab is the default setting. Clicking on any Strand will copy it to the selection set on the left. Only one carrier strand may be selected. Next select one or more cables that the strand will carry. Picking any cable on the 'SELECTED CABLES' list will remove it. Clicking on 'View Bundle Plot' will show a plot of the overall bundle and force a calculation of the bundle diameter. This will show in the selected cables list. This is an optional box labeled 'Enter Bundle Diameter' (lower left corner). Any entry in this box will be used by SM3 and it will not attempt to calculate the bundle diameter. The 'View Bundle Plot' will be grayed out (not accessible). Also if too many cables are entered (more than 11) then the program will force the user to enter the bundle diameter. Enter some reasonable value even if you do not have any icing conditions. See advanced features for more options on this screen. >>>> Third Screen 'Sag/Tension' The span length and sag are entered here. An assumed installed temperature is shown and it may be adjusted with the control under it. Tension calculations are shown on the right. Any changes to span length or sag will cause the tension values to be recalculated. The option box 'Effect of Temperature Change' when checked will show a scrollable table. >>>> Fourth Screen 'NESC Results' Two option boxes at the lower right will add columns in the output table when checked. The settings of these boxes also applies to any printed output. The 'Set Ice/Wind Load' button when clicked brings up another screen. From this screen you may: 1. Select the load for rule 251 by selecting light, medium, or heavy. 2. Check 'User Loading1'. When checked another loading condition is shown. Any of the values (including description) may be changed by clicking on it. 3. When 'User Loading1' is checked 'User Loading2' appears. It operates the same as 'User Loading1'. 4. When any changes are made on this screen a 'Save above values' button will appear. If clicked, all changes will be permanently saved such that they will be the default values the next time SM3 is run. After you have saved your desired values, you should not have to return to this screen. 5. The button 'Exit Ice/Wind Loadings' must be clicked to exit this screen. >>>> Fifth Screen 'Files/Print' Files Window: Open a file of a previously saved data set. Save the current data set to a file Print Window: Print a report of the current data set. The two options controll the amount of detail that is included in the report. Print a report of the cables/strand available in SM3. >>>> Sixth Screen 'Help' You are here. >>>> Seventh Screen 'EXIT' Exits program. Warns to save data before exiting. >>>> Advanced Features 'Cables'. When the strand list is shown a box appears permitting the entry of a creep value. Bundle plots always orient the carrier strand to the 12 o'clock position. The bundle is assembled according to the following rules: 1. The cables are sorted by diameter. 2. The largest cable (#1) is selected and #2 is put at the 3 o'clock position of #1. 3. Cable #3 is placed above #1 and #2. 4. Cable #4 is place below #1 and #2. 5. Next cable #5 is placed against #1 and #4. Cables are continued about #1 in a clockwise direction until no more can be placed. 6. Next cables are placed in a second ring in a counter-clockwise direction. 7. The program limit occurs when this second ring is filled. It takes 11 cables plus a carrier for the limit to be reached, providing that all cables are of the same diameter. 8. These rules may fail to pack certain cable combinations in the most optimum bundle configuration. The bundle diameter is calculated as follows: 1. A bundle diameter is calculated for each cable and all other cables. If the largest value contains all cables then it is the desired solution. 2. If not then a three point tangent bundle diameter is computed for each three cable possibility and the minimum diameter that contains all cables is used. Most problems require that one strand be selected, however there are a few exceptions. 1. When a drop cable is selected, it must be the only selection. 2. Integrated cables contain a carrier strand, therefore a separate strand cannot be selected. The tab 'User Defined' enables one to add cables to this list. A maximum of 40 user defined cables may be added. All user defined cables are stored in file CABLEADD.TXT Adding user defined cables. 1. Click on box 'Create/Modify User Defined'. 2. If you want to create a user defined cable, select a similar cable and click on it. 3. You must next modify its' Product Description so that it is unique. There are a few rules: Carrier strand cables contain EHS or HTL in their name. Drop cables contain VM in their name. Integrated messenger cable must end with Mnnn (where nnn is a 3 digit numeric value). 4. Your cable is now added to the list. Any cable property value may be changed by clicking on it. 5. Changing a cable property value to DEL will delete that cable. 6. Click on Exit to restore the selected cables list.
