CommScope Announces Fiber Optic Improvement for Gigabit Ethernet
HICKORY, N.C., March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- CommScope, Inc. (NYSE: CTV), a leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance fiber optic cables, announces it has improved the performance of its technology award-winning UltraFiber(TM) 62.5 micron fiber product making it the longest distance/highest bandwidth 62.5 micron fiber on the market today.

UltraFiber, the first fiber product with extended bandwidth, now offers a new, enhanced bandwidth of 220/1000 MHz-km and laser certification. These features allow it to support the IEEE 802.3z Gigabit Ethernet standard to distances of 500 meters at the 850 nanometer (nm) wavelength and 1200 meters at the 1300 nm wavelength. This distance performance more than doubles the industry standard of 220 meters and 500 meters at the two respective wavelengths. In addition, UltraFiber is laser-certified for use with both vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and standard single mode lasers and will not require the use of offset patch cords for proper operation.

"Many users of standard fiber products will find they have distance limitations when they attempt to migrate from low speed to high speed applications, potentially forcing them to undergo costly re-cabling," stated Teresa Munsey, CommScope's Fiber Optic Product Manager for Local Area Networks. "UltraFiber gives our customers the ability to support low speed 10 megabit per second light emitting diode (LED) applications all the way up through 1 gigabit per second laser applications in one fiber product. UltraFiber is currently the only 62.5 micron fiber that has the bandwidth or laser certification needed to support Gigabit Ethernet out past 1,000 meters."

CommScope's UltraFiber is part of a complete fiber optic product offering which includes outside plant loose tube cables, self-supporting loose tube cables, riser-rated indoor/outdoor loose tube cables, riser-rated indoor/outdoor tight buffer cables, indoor premise cables and a variety of specialty cables. CommScope is the world's largest manufacturer of coaxial cable and a leading supplier of high-performance fiber optic and twisted pair cables for telecommunications applications.
