5G is Driving Wireless and Wireline Networks to Converge
The convergence of wireless and wireline networks forces the two different groups to work together. Operating these networks two different ways not only won’t work, it’s not efficient. Convergence enables greater efficiencies across the network. Convergence of the outside plant begins with the physical infrastructure. Wireless and wireline teams must work together to efficiently leverage the resources for deployment of wireless and wireline services to ultimately the same customer base. While these services may have traditionally been on two separate networks in the past, 5G is driving these services to be on the same ubiquitous network that might be over point-to-point fiber, a PON network, a PON network leveraging coexistence, or a fiber network leveraged by WDM to provide the channels required for a 5G network that also supports connectivity requirements for IoT, Smart Cities and more. Convergence of the inside plant includes being able to support the needs of the traditional central office network and supporting low-latency data applications driven by 5G evolution with Edge Data Centers, which requires different mind-sets in the same facility. Operators need to support the rip and replace data center mind-set and multimode fiber cable plant, while at the same time supporting evolving needs of the incoming outside plant singlemode fiber infrastructure for a lifetime.
