Southern Polytechnic University. The gift will fund a scholarship
program in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology (ECET)
department in honor of alumni Ken Williams, Director of Engineering
Technology for Cox Communications.
Williams, the recipient of the 2007 Polaris Award sponsored by
CommScope, was recognized as an individual who displayed exceptional
achievement and commitment to the development and/or deployment of
Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial (HFC) networks for commercial services
applications. Williams received the award during The Society of Cable
Telecommunications Engineers' Conference on Emerging Technologies held
January 23-25, 2007 in Houston, TX.. Subsequently, he has been
recognized by many of his peers and in numerous cable industry trade
publications.
Williams is a key contributor to Cox's corporate engineering standards,
including a broadband architecture initiative called "EON" (Extensible
Optical Network), which was put in place to help Cox expand the raw RF
bandwidth of its HFC network and increase service and reliability.
“CommScope is particularly pleased to make this contribution to Southern
Polytechnic in honor of Ken’s career achievements. This gift is an
investment in the future of engineering technology, a discipline for
which Ken has earned a reputation for being a strategic thinker and
visionary leader. We need highly-trained people to keep broadband
networks on the cutting-edge and we also need the next generation of
engineers and technicians to design, build, and maintain high bandwidth
platforms for video, voice and data services tomorrow,” said Jim Hughes,
CommScope’s Executive Vice President, Broadband Sales and Marketing.
