Andrew Spreads Wireless Coverage Throughout Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport

February 27, 2006 WESTCHESTER, Ill.

Travelers who journey through Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport's new Terminal D, its parking garage, or the airport's Grand Hyatt Hotel will enjoy clear wireless reception thanks to an indoor network furnished by Andrew Corporation, a global leader in communications systems and products.

Operational in Terminal D since its July opening, Andrew's distributed antenna system provides cellular- and PCS-band commercial wireless signals for mobile phone users, and trunked radio signals for public safety and homeland security personnel, in all of the terminal's and Grand Hyatt's publicly-accessible areas. Installation of a distributed antenna system in Terminal D's seven-level parking garage is nearing completion.

"The availability of strong wireless signals inside transportation hubs and other public buildings is as important as ever to operators and their subscribers," said Bob Hudzik, group president, Wireless Innovations Group, Andrew. "With the public's ever-increasing use of cell phones, wirelessly-connected laptops, and personal digital assistants, operators must ensure those devices work when customers want them. Andrew is proud that the DFW airport authorities continue to utilize us for extending wireless coverage throughout its new facilities."

In addition to its work in the new Terminal D, Andrew previously installed distributed antenna systems in terminals A, B, C, and E, along with other buildings on the airport's property. A distributed antenna system operates by receiving signals from operators' base stations and distributing the signals down hallways, into nooks, and throughout corridors. Four wireless operators already serve customers through the airport's indoor network, with a fifth expected to join later.

"DFW International Airport's new terminal was designed to be an expansive yet fluid channel for efficient international travel, which accounted for the current and future needs of personal and business travelers," said Ali Nemati, manager of information technologies, DFW International Airport. "Ensuring adequate communications systems was something we understood to be important to today's traveler. Having worked with Andrew Corporation in the past, we knew they could design and install a top-notch system within a short time-frame."

"This project at DFW is a model of cooperation between the wireless telecommunications carriers and this large public institution, and their joint efforts have been a clear success for the public good," said Leo Holzenthal, project manager for the DFW distributed antenna system project and vice president, M S Benbow and Associates, a Metairie, La.-based professional engineering corporation. "The distributed antenna system expansion through the Terminal D facility not only delivers first class wireless services to DFW customers and staff, but also enables modern innovations such as wireless priority services for emergency personnel in this large public space. The system expansion enables simple diagnostics and maintenance, reducing the overall life cost to the service providers."

Andrew offers a complete line of robust and field-proven distributed communications system solutions for difficult coverage areas, tunnels, metros, and buildings, and has more than 15 years of experience in designing, installing, and managing large and complex radio frequency distribution systems for metropolitan railways, building owners, and public mobile radio and telephone operators throughout the world. Major projects include the Hong Kong metro, Channel Tunnel, Mecca Road Tunnel, Denver International Airport, and Rockefeller Center, NY.
