CommScope Expands BrightPath, Adding PON Compatibility and Extending Availability to European and Asian Cable Operators

April 27, 2010 HICKORY, N.C.

CommScope Inc., a global leader in infrastructure solutions for communications networks, has introduced two significant additions to its BrightPath fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) solution that expands its availability into global markets and makes it compatible for use in passive optical networking (PON) applications.

CommScope’s BrightPath® system is an innovative solution for FTTx access designed to integrate seamlessly within an existing hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) network used by cable operators. The heart of the BrightPath system is the radio frequency over glass optical network unit (R-ONU). The new BrightPath R-ONU additions are:

  • The 1610 nanometer return path capability R-ONU, enabling customers to provide a radio frequency over glass (RFoG) solution that meets the current draft Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) standard and is fully compatible with IEEE- and International Telecommunications Union-standard PON solutions. This addition enables customers to operate RFoG and PON services simultaneously on a single fiber network.
  • R-ONUs that support the EuroDOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications) standard, enabling cable operators in Europe and Asia for the first time to use the BrightPath family of products to deliver services to customers.

“We are pleased to expand the options available in our innovative BrightPath solution for cable television and broadband operators,” said Shane Eleniak, vice president, Advanced Broadband Solutions, CommScope. “The addition of PON compatibility to our BrightPath R-ONUs ensures that our customers can build a future-looking fiber-based infrastructure with a guaranteed service evolution path from RFoG to PON, helping protect their network investment. And we are excited about bringing the benefits of BrightPath to operators outside the US for the first time. We are confident that these additional capabilities will add to the benefits customers enjoy from BrightPath, such as improved performance, reduced noise and a lower-cost approach to delivering fiber-based services to customers.”

The BrightPath system will be featured at CommScope’s exhibit May 4-6 at the ANGA Cable Show in Cologne, Germany.

From advanced hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) networks to state of the art fiber-to-the-X (FTTx) architectures, CommScope offers a complete portfolio of radio frequency (RF) and optical network infrastructure solutions that enable cable operators worldwide to provide high bandwidth services for residential and commercial customers. CommScope is chosen time and again by leading cable operators around the globe recognizing CommScope’s leadership position and 30-plus year commitment to making products of the highest quality yielding unrelenting reliability and system performance.
