CommScope,
a global leader in infrastructure solutions for
communications networks, named its first annual Lifetime Achievement Award
winners. Honored were CommScope Engineering Fellow Amid Hashim, an expert innovator,
and the “Panel
Antenna with Variable Phase Shifter” patent, invented by CommScope Engineering
Fellow Dr. Martin Zimmerman.
“CommScope is proud to recognize and celebrate Amid’s
and Martin’s remarkable connectivity and mobility accomplishments that have helped
fuel our continued success,” said Morgan Kurk, executive vice president and chief
operating officer, CommScope. “Their pioneering spirit, inventiveness and
passion to deliver and share innovative network solutions are at the heart of what
we stand for at CommScope. On behalf of everyone at the company, I congratulate
and thank Amid and Martin for their significant technical contributions and for
generously inspiring others.”

These special awards
were announced and presented during CommScope’s 2018 Innovators in Action
Summit in Charlotte, N.C. during an awards dinner and ceremony on Feb. 8, 2018.
The
evening also included recognition of more than 50 team members from 36
award-winning engineering and technology projects from 2017 that demonstrate the
company’s best agility, breakthrough, cost reduction, and customer impact
innovations.
The 2018 Lifetime Achievement
Award—Innovator was presented to Hashim. This award recognizes individuals who are
distinguished by the depth and consistency of their technical contributions
throughout their careers at CommScope.
Based in
Richardson, Tex., and with 40-plus years of experience working in the
telecommunications industry, Hashim has spent nearly half of his professional
career working for CommScope. With almost 70 U.S. patents to his name, Hashim’s
ideas have enabled CommScope to be the first to market with several solutions
for enterprise networking applications. Most notably, he is one of the
inventors on a multi-stage electrical compensation technology patent, which is
so effective that CommScope licenses it to other companies.
“It makes me
very proud to know that my work has given CommScope a competitive edge over the
years,” Hashim said. “It’s also exciting to know that we produce patents that make
a great impact on our customers and the communications industries we serve as a
whole, and continue to grow our business.”
“I’m proud to
accept this award on behalf of my family.”
U.S. Patent
Number 7,298,233: “Panel Antenna with Variable Phase Shifter" received the
2018 Lifetime Achievement Award—Patent. Zimmerman accepted the award for this
patent granted in November 2007. Based in Joliet, Ill., Zimmerman’s smaller,
less expensive, and more reliable concept allows most of the base station antennas designed at CommScope
since 2005 to use some variant of this design. It represents tens of millions of phase shifters and has
significantly added to CommScope’s bottom line.
“This is exciting to me,” Zimmerman said. “The communications
products I work on, as well as so many other innovative technologies our
engineers and scientists develop, help build the networks that allow people to
have 24-hour connectivity virtually anywhere. I’m proud this CommScope program recognized
me, along with my fellow colleagues, for our innovations and dedication.”
Hashim and Zimmerman are CommScope Fellows, representing two
of 10 colleagues wielding the highest professional rank among the company’s more
than 1,400 engineering and technical employees.
