Austrian mobile operator tele.ring has licensed Andrew Corporation's
Optum(TM) automated cell planning tool to provide its rapidly increasing
subscriber base the best possible cellular services in both its GSM and
UMTS networks across Austria.
In competitive trials, tele.ring determined that Optum was consistently
the best performer as a software tool for wireless network planning and
design. Optum automatically finds the optimal radio network
configuration for an operator--the right mix of power levels, antenna
type, direction, and tilt producing the best combination of coverage,
capacity, and quality for minimum cost.
"Tele.ring customers expect the best value and Andrew Corporation is an
innovative company whose powerful products help us to deliver that
value," said Georg Podebradsky, manager of radio network planning and
optimization at tele.ring. "The Optum product's results are impressive.
Optum has improved our network coverage and our quality metrics. Its
technology is clearly ahead of the competition. We are very pleased that
a single supplier such as Andrew can provide for both our 2G and 3G
Optum maximizes the trade off between network performance and cost. For
example, tele.ring can incorporate constraints at both site or sector
levels and find the optimal network configuration while considering a
mix of services and quality metrics. In trials, tele.ring proved Optum's
ability to quickly generate significant improvements even over manually
well optimized GSM (global system for mobile communications) and UMTS
(universal mobile telecommunications system) networks.
"Optum's performance at tele.ring proves its superior technology," said
Martin Coates, vice president of Andrew Network Solutions EMEA.
"Tele.ring's use of Optum builds on its investment in Andrew's
market-leading radio network planning tool, Odyssey(TM), to produce
outstanding value for the money. The tight integration between the two
products means that Optum can be used straight out of the box to
significantly improve tele.ring's planning results."
Andrew Network Solutions, one of Andrew's five product groups, supports
the entire wireless network lifecycle with wireless network design,
optimization, management, and location solutions for customers. Optum is
an automated cell planning tool that can be used in conjunction with the
Odyssey radio planning tool to provide comprehensive cell and network
design data to enable radio planners to select the optimum locations for
cell sites. Optum examines the prediction files produced by Odyssey and
generates a set of scenarios of cell configurations against a set of
design criterion based on network cost, time to deploy, traffic, and
