Video content delivery is becoming more complex than ever. And, service providers are exploring how best to evolve the delivery of all of this content, as consumers’ video appetite only grows. As we noted in our May 2014 Consumer Entertainment Index, while the living room is still the center of household entertainment, the proliferation of connected devices and the growing popularity of streaming content is mobilizing consumers within the home. And it shows no signs of slowing down.
Enter Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined Networks (SDNs).
ARRIS is exploring the benefits and applicability of both NFV and SDNs for a number of network control and data-plane functions. We believe NFV and SDN Controllers may prove invaluable in permitting operators to increase feature velocity, simplify network management, and capitalize on the cost benefits of elasticity within virtualized environments.
Over the course of IBC 2014 and SCTE 2014, we will demonstrate three advanced network functions implemented with a common SDN platform:
The deployment of an open source SDN platform enables service providers to abstract complicated north-bound interfaces and use simpler HTTP-based, RESTful management for network functions. Our IBC demonstrations use OpenDaylight, an open source SDN platform able to translate complex interfaces like PCMM to a web-based applications platform.
ARRIS continues to collaborate with our customers to find the right video content delivery path, and NFV and SDNs are two worthy virtualization options for consideration.
