With the creation of the Citizen Broadband Radio Service (CBRS), businesses will be able to access the highly regarded 3.5 GHz band and establish or augment their wireless networks with a Spectrum Access System (SAS). The key to the SAS is the dynamic spectrum access technologies that facilitate the sharing of available frequencies while minimizing interference with other CBRS and incumbent users.
In 2015, the United States' Federal Communication Commission (FCC) announced the formation of the CBRS, which grants users the right to share the 3.5 GHz band (3550-3700 MHz) provided they give priority to higher tier users. This three-tiered sharing paradigm requires the use of a SAS, which utilizes advanced analysis and computing technologies to allow users to share spectrum with each other and with incumbents, and the environmental sensing capability (ESC).
The 150 MHz section of this favorable mid-band spectrum is divided into fifteen 10 MHz channels. Up to seven of the available channels will be auctioned off to Priority Access License (PAL) holders for each county, allowing businesses to create or boost their regional wireless network at a lower barrier to entry. At least 80 MHz of the band will be available for free to General Authorized Access (GAA) users for commercial purposes provided they properly share the spectrum with Incumbents.
