CommScope to Showcase New Optical Solution for Cable Networks at INTX

April 29, 2015 HICKORY, NC

Cable operators continue to evolve their networks to converged optical platforms that can deliver high bandwidth to subscribers, meeting their demands for fast speeds and content-rich media. To help operators deploy a more reliable optical network, CommScope is releasing a ruggedized optical line terminal (OLT) solution for an Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON), which it will showcase at next week’s Internet and Television Expo (INTX) in Chicago.

CommScope believes its new solution, the C9516 EPON OLT, is the cable industry’s first temperature-hardened, DOCSIS Provisioning of EPON (DPoE) enabled, 10-Gigabit EPON OLT, specially manufactured to withstand extended temperature range environments while delivering enhanced functionality.

“Operators are evolving their hybrid fiber/coax networks by pushing fiber optic cable deeper into the network in a variety of fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) architectures,” said Ric Johnsen, senior vice president, Broadband, CommScope. “Our new optical line terminal supports operators’ deployments with full 10G EPON functionality in a high-density, fully redundant and temperature-hardened platform.”

An optical line terminal converts electrical signals to fiber optic signals and coordinates multiplexing. CommScope’s new OLT solution offers a compact size, rich traffic management, multi-rate EPON and 10G EPON support, co-existence support and DPoE in a temperature hardened platform based on the company’s leading C9500 OLT platform. The new OLT supports the addition of pluggable optics, line cards and optional redundancy to meet future bandwidth demands.

“With the launch of this new OLT, CommScope is taking another industry-leading step with our family of PON solutions by expanding the traditional boundaries of PON OLTs to include outside plant based options,” said Johnsen.

The INTX is the official trade show of the National Cable and Telecommunications Association (NCTA), the principal trade association for the U.S. cable industry. The NCTA represents companies serving more than 90 percent of the nation’s cable video households and more than 200 programming networks. The INTX takes place May 5-7, 2015 at McCormick Place in Chicago, IL, and CommScope will exhibit the C9516 EPON OLT at booth #935.
