IDC, a global provider of market intelligence and advisory services, issued a report in May 2010 titled "The Digital Universe Decade – Are You Ready?”. In this report, IDC sizes the amount of digital information available in 2009 to be 800,000 petabytes. (A petabyte is one million gigabytes.) IDC predicts that digital information will grow by 50% in 2010 and by 4400% by 2020.
With such incredible growth, how are data centers supposed to keep up? Scaling to 44 times the data center capacity available today will require a combination of new construction and higher capacity networks. We can expect that Cloud-based data centers will play a big role in the new construction push. For the required higher capacity networks, the move to 40 and 100 Gb/s applications in data center environments will enable the high speed connectivity needs for the coming zettabyte era.
The good news is that 40 and 100 Gb/s is not just a dream but a reality today. The Higher Speed Ethernet subcommittee of the Ethernet Alliance recently conducted a first-of-its-kind industry “Plugfest” to evaluate the readiness of infrastructure components to answer the demands of 40 and 100 Gb/s applications in the data center. As one of the 16 vendors that participated in the event, CommScope’s OM3 and OM4 fiber optic infrastructure solutions exceeded IEEE 802.3ba requirements for high-speed performance and effectively demonstrated interoperability with all other vendor components tested.
