In a previous blog, I discussed what I see as the advantages of e-learning versus traditional instructor led training approach. E-learning is not new, but certainly for the infrastructure market it is not something that has been widely implemented.
I have been involved in CommScope's training programs for over a decade, and have experienced the challenges of delivering a truly globally consistent training and certification program. Feedback from students and their employers have usually been complaints about course costs, course cancellations, time away from the office, travel expenses to name a few.
Our initiatives in developing a full line of online courses has been a direct result of this feedback and enabled us to vastly increase the amount of educational material available on infrastructure solutions.
But the big question - Has it been and is it effective?
I believe so, but then I am biased. So it was very refreshing to hear recently from one our students with his thoughts on the courses:
As someone with many major certifications I totally agree with the new way of testing. It forces you to concentrate, take notes, and not just sit down and listen to the modules. I think the Commscope Training Program is second to none and I am looking forward to getting me and my guys as trained as possible. Keep up the good work. I should be finishing the 360 course tonight and then moving on to the Data Center Course.
Apart from the praise for the CommScope program, which of course we much appreciate, I think this commentary nicely highlights what the online material has achieved.
1) The assessment process has enhanced the learning and brought a real meaning to the certification
2) The amount of courses available has enabled students to learn and expandinto different areas of infrastructure solutions and their applications
3) Probably the most important word in the comment is the word 'tonight'. The online system has broken the age old requirement for students to learn in a fixed location at a fixed time. It allows education to be slotted into the rest of our busy working lives, and become a continuous process rather than a 'one hit wonder'.
