If you didn’t make it to The Cable Show in Boston, you might have missed out on some of the hot topics being discussed. As the cable TV industry shifts its focus to the ANGA Cable Show in Germany, let’s get caught up on what you might hear.

As always, DOCSIS 3.0® and IP-based video were discussed everywhere and anywhere. Not only was everyone talking about solutions that deploy these technologies, but there was also a major focus on deploying intelligent solutions that can make headends more efficient.

It is no secret that modern day headends are looking more and more like data centers every day. You may ask, “Why is that?” As cable operators continue to add services, one atop the other, advanced broadband technologies are now allowing operators to offer their customers the additional services they demand.

Now with all that those services, operators need to deploy solutions that are both efficient and intelligent, as well as reduce their energy usage. 

A Universal Wideband Edge QAM solution can help operators with many of their needs. From this universal platform, operators can deliver QAM channels that can be configured as any service—DOCSIS, broadcast video, SDV or VOD. Universal also means delivering any service anywhere in the spectrum as well significantly reducing the amount of equipment and rack space in the hub and lowering power and HVAC costs. A wideband edge QAM solution’sarchitecture allows complete individual frequency agility. A QAM channel can be placed anywhere in the band and its channel agility simplifies an operator’s frequency management.

Intelligent solutions that also enhance energy conservation have proven to be a very important topic in Europe as well. We’ve seen a huge interest in that on the data center and enterprise sides.
