CommScope Makes Environmental Stewardship Part of Its Advanced Network Connectivity Technologies

May 28, 2009 HICKORY, N.C.

CommScope’s drive toward continuous improvement of its company-wide environmental stewardship received another boost with the International Standards Organization (ISO) 14001 certification of its Claremont, NC manufacturing facility.

Claremont is the 14th facility in CommScope’s global manufacturing network to achieve ISO 14001 certification for its implementation and maintenance of an environmental management system. This standard distinguishes a system of practices that minimize impact and analyzes programs for recycling, waste reduction, chemical management, waste disposal, emissions and others.

“CommScope is committed to reducing impact on the environment while providing intelligent, advanced and high-performance network connectivity solutions,” said John Moore, environmental, health and safety officer, CommScope. “Thanks to a significant commitment from everyone at CommScope, the vast majority of our distribution and manufacturing facilities are ISO 14001 certified. From the production of our products to the ways in which we help our customers make their businesses more environmentally friendly, our people are dedicated to making CommScope more energy efficient, cost-effective and environmentally responsible.”

For more than 20 years, CommScope has made a concerted effort to help customers implement energy-saving and energy-efficient solutions as well as build its own foundation of environmentally-conscious initiatives. For example, CommScope introduced its award-winning ReelSmart® recycling program in 1988, enabling the company to reuse more than 100,000 cable reels annually and effectively saving approximately 29,000 trees. Annually, CommScope recycles more than 50 million pounds collectively of metals, plastics, paper and packaging materials and conserves more than 25 million gallons of water—the equivalent of nearly 39 Olympic-sized swimming pools—by controlling evaporative losses. As CommScope embraces emerging technologies and maintains its global leadership role in connectivity solutions, environmental stewardship takes an increasing role in day-to-day operations.

Claremont is one of the primary manufacturing and product development facilities for CommScope’s Enterprise Solutions business, which is a world leader in network infrastructure solutions for businesses and governments. Employees at the Claremont facility produce copper LAN cables, fiber optic cables and specialty coaxial cables for use primarily in business enterprise applications. Through its ability to develop structured, reliable, durable, intelligent and advanced network infrastructure solutions, CommScope Enterprise Solutions provides opportunities for companies to minimize energy consumption and long-term waste throughout the network. CommScope solutions are engineered to outlast multiple generations of network equipment. This durability adds up to an enormous reduction in waste over the lifespan of an enterprise’s network infrastructure.

In addition, CommScope solutions enable enterprises to reduce their own ecological footprint. CommScope’s Intelligent Building Infrastructure Solutions (IBIS) enable building management to utilize a single network for the entire building’s systems like HVAC, lighting, energy, security and communications. With an integrated network, building management can lower energy consumption, reduce demand for additional IT equipment and simplify IT management.

“We believe that CommScope has engineered the best solutions for a better company and a better environment,” said Mike Kelley, senior vice president, Global Operations, CommScope Enterprise Solutions. “New energy and governmental regulations, ethical concerns and the high cost of energy are impacting enterprise IT decision-making. Companies need solutions that can help them better manage potentially environmentally damaging resources while still addressing their business and technology needs. With its commitment toward a greener tomorrow, CommScope is there to help.”
