CommScope’s Innovative Cabinets, Wireline Components Offer Cost-Savings, Better Performance for xDSL Networks

—New 48” Cabinets, Connector Blocks and Protectors Will Help Telecom Operators Better Compete—
June 12, 2008 HICKORY, N.C.

CommScope, Inc., a global leader in infrastructure solutions for communications networks, is helping wireline service providers stay competitive by offering new cabinets and apparatus devices that can reduce capital and operating expenses and improve VDSL (Very-high-speed Digital Subscriber Line) network performance, respectively.

The smaller footprint and denser design of CommScopes three new 48 inch cabinets help minimize initial capital investment by reducing right-of-way costs and installation time, while offering a pay as you grow investment architecture. All three cabinets also offer industry leading acoustic and thermal performance, which translates into lower operating expenses as cooler cabinets typically result in longer battery lives. Nearby home owners will also appreciate the cabinets smaller size.

CommScope has built more value into its cabinet offerings by meeting stricter municipality requirements for smaller footprints and noise reduction, said Lindsay Allen, director of product line management, Cabinet Solutions. Weve also created a few different types of these cabinets that allow for additional cost-savings. CommScopes new cabinets are immediately available in three unique types: modular electronics, integrated cross connect, and integrated power pedestals.

Telecom operators can delay initial investment costs by deploying the modular electronics cabinet in phases as subscription numbers increase. This allows for field expansion without service disruption, and eliminates the costs associated with redundant AC load center, DC power system, and fiber termination panels of secondary modules.

The integrated cross connect cabinet saves money by eliminating the deployment of a separate FDI/SAI (Feeder/Distribution Interface / Serving Area Interface) cabinet, eliminating installation time normally used to connect OSP cables from the FDI/SAI to the electronics cabinet.

The integrated power pedestal cabinet eliminates the need for a separate power pedestal and an electrician to connect a power line to the electronics cabinet. This cabinet further decreases right-of-way costs that result from having FDI/SAI cabinets or power pedestals separate from the electronics cabinet.

CommScope is also now offering uniquely wired connector blocks and protectors that can improve maximum attainable bit rate speeds on VDSL networks by as much as 20 percent when used in combination. These innovations reduce insertion loss and decrease near end cross talk by utilizing low capacitance, low resistance, and low insertion loss components. The 310 VDSL grade connector block is wired with CAT5e cables. CommScopes two newest protectors, the 9-type hybrid and the 4-type gas discharge tube with positive temperature coefficient resistors, improve VDSL performance in central offices, remote huts, and cable entrance vaults.

As consumers demand more and more bandwidth for digital applications in the home, service providers are continuously looking for new, innovative ways to improve the maximum attainable bit rate speed on their VDSL networks, said Allen. CommScopes long heritage in connecting and protecting service provider networks positions us uniquely to provide these solutions.

CommScope will display its innovative cabinet and apparatus solutions for xDSL network operators, as well a new line of fiber distribution cabinets, at the NXTcomm08 trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 16-19, in booth #SU6211.
