Gartner Names CommScope’s Airvana a Visionary in Small Cell Equipment in 2015

October 29, 2015 CHELMSFORD, Mass.

Airvana, a leader in small cell solutions and now part of CommScope, has been positioned as a Visionary in Gartner’s 2015 Magic Quadrant for Small Cell Equipment for the second consecutive year. The award-winning OneCell® Cloud RAN small cell system and the company’s other solutions for indoor wireless challenges were evaluated based on completeness of vision, and on the ability to execute against that vision.

“Increasing numbers of smartphones, tablets and similar devices, together with the proliferation of video consumption and the transition from 3G to Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks and services, are contributing to high growth in data traffic,” the Gartner report states. “A common short-term approach to coping with this growth has been to offload this traffic onto unmanaged Wi-Fi networks. However, communications service providers (CSPs) should look to improve the customer experience by keeping subscribers on their cellular networks, an aim they could achieve using a combination of picocells, femtocells and carrier-class Wi-Fi equipment.”

OneCell uses a revolutionary Cloud RAN (C-RAN) architecture to deliver superior LTE performance across public venues and large enterprises at up to 70% lower cost than competing solutions. OneCell was recognized by the GSMA as the Outstanding Overall Mobile Technology at the 2015 Mobile World Congress. The company’s S1000 small cell provides a simple all-in-one LTE and Wi-Fi solution for small and medium business locations, and was recently a winner in the CTIA Emerging Technology Awards. Complementing the small cell portfolio, the company’s Device Management System enables operators to reliably and economically deploy and support large-scale small cell networks.

In October 2015, Airvana became part of CommScope, a global provider of connectivity and essential infrastructure solutions for communications networks and leader in providing indoor wireless coverage and capacity. The combination of the companies creates a broad in-building wireless product portfolio, with CommScope’s vast experience in deploying in-building solutions in many of the world’s top venues enhanced by Airvana’s track record in developing innovative base station and small cell solutions. CommScope’s global marketing, distribution and support capabilities will help to rapidly grow this innovative small cell business, which includes more than 1.5 million deployed femtocells.

“We feel Gartner’s naming of Airvana as a visionary in the 2015 Magic Quadrant for Small Cell Equipment underscores the value of innovation in wireless infrastructure,” said Vedat Eyuboglu, chief technology officer and co-founder. “We believe that our unique C-RAN approach, coupled with our strength as part of CommScope, will help mobile operators deliver the best possible wireless experience to their subscribers.”

Airvana will exhibit at Small Cells Americas, November 3-4 in Dallas, TX. Senior director of product management Michael McFarland will present “Unlocking small cells opportunities in indoor and high density environments with C-RAN” on November 4 at 9:30 a.m.
