If you have invested in upgrading your headends and optical nodes to increase capacity and performance, you want to ensure the last mile access network can deliver higher performance, as well. That’s why investing in some of the least expensive RF components like cables, amplifiers, splitters, couplers, and ground blocks is a good idea—because degraded performance by any of these key parts of the network can limit bandwidth and cause service outages, truck rolls, and, ultimately, customer churn.

Another consideration: as MSOs migrate to the promise of more bandwidth in the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification 3.1, or DOCSIS 3.1, you would hope to take advantage of higher frequency modulations: up to 4096 quadrature amplitude modulation, or QAM, compared to 256 QAM for DOCSIS 3.0. These higher modulations require a higher signal-to-noise ratio, which means a cleaner RF path is needed.
