Better Wi-Fi Installations in Three Easy Steps, Part 3: Validation

Ekahau Site Survey provides a real-world view of WLAN coverage and performance based on data you either create or collect through predictions and site surveys. If problems are detected on the wireless network, validation will highlight those issues and give you an opportunity to address them before your customer calls.

In Part 1 of our blog series, we looked at complications that arise during the Wi-Fi installation process. In Part 2, I addressed the importance of predictive analysis and a proper site survey in a Wi-Fi implementation. In Part 3, we’ll talk about the final phase of installation and about how the Ekahau Site Survey (ESS) can help streamline processes and help you achieve a successful and rock-solid Wi-Fi implementation.

Why Should You Offer a Post-Installation Validation?

Finally! The network is installed, and the APs are powered up and humming along nicely. Your controller is showing that all the radios are serving clients, and you are done! Right? Actually, no, we are not done. The final step comes after the prediction, after the site survey, after the installation and in those moments just before you hand the keys over to your customer. The time has come to “prove it.” In the scope of work, you likely detailed metrics for success. The customer has an expectation of what areas you covered, how fast users can access Wi-Fi in those areas and how many users the shiny new network will support. Now it’s up to you to give your customer a detailed written and graphic representation of a successful implementation, per the milestones in the scope of work, in the form of a post-installation validation. Again, using ESS, you’re able to walk the same path you took when surveying the network the first time around. You’ll take measurements and gather data on all of the same items we’ve looked at so far, but, this time, it’ll be success you’re looking to illustrate. As a bonus, if there are problems on the network, your validation will highlight those issues and give you an opportunity to address them before your customer calls and you issue a trouble ticket.

Three Benefits of a Post-Installation Validation:

  • Peace of mind:
    • A picture of the wireless network you implemented at this moment in time
    • The network works
  • Proof:
    • You delivered what was asked or more
    • All issues were addressed
    • Evidence of services rendered
  • Documentation for future use:
    • Baseline for future upgrades
    • Past performance for future customers
