Andrew’s HELIAX FXL Aluminum RF Cable Wins a Gold Award for Energy Efficiency

February 3, 2009 BEIJING

BEIJING--(BUSINESS WIRE)--HELIAX® 2.0 FXL, the aluminum radio frequency (RF) cable manufactured by Andrew, the CommScope, Inc. division that is a global leader in wireless communication systems and products, recently won the Golden Award for Green Communication Energy-Efficiency Technology in an industry contest held in China.

Andrew was one of two companies to win the gold award for green innovation in the Third Competition for Outstanding Information Application Developments, organized by the China Information Industry Net (CNII), the Chinese media agency affiliated with the China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The gold award was presented to Andrew for its distinguished contributions in developing cutting-edge technologies that enable telecom operators to boost energy efficiency, reduce operating costs, and improve profitability.

“Over the past 55 years, Andrew has been dedicated to the development and manufacture of cable products that maximize the performance of radio frequency networks,” said Andrew’s Ben Cardwell, vice president of sales and marketing, Asia-Pacific. “In anticipation of the changing landscape in China’s telecom industry, Andrew is ready to use our cutting-edge technology and sophisticated application experiences to assist the Chinese operators in building eco-friendly mobile communication networks.”

Andrew’s HELIAX FXL aluminum RF cables use lighter weight aluminum as the electrical conduit of the cable’s outer conductor. Compared with traditional all-copper cables, HELIAX FXL is more energy efficient, durable, and has greater flexibility. It requires less electric power and fuel to manufacture and transport, and HELIAX FXL conforms to the European Union’s RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and China’s RoHS SJ/T 11364-2006 directives.

The flexibility and environmental friendliness of Andrew’s HELIAX FXL aluminum RF cables have enabled the International Environmental Convention Tower to achieve its ecological and energy-efficiency targets. In 2008, Andrew’s FXL aluminum transmission cable lines were installed in the Ministry of Environmental Protection Building, Beijing’s latest landmark building and the workplace for implementation and management of the international environmental protection treaty in China. The building has become a paragon of energy efficiency and environmental friendliness thanks to its incorporation of cutting-edge technologies in building materials, air conditioning, natural lighting, and solar energy application

Andrew first launched HELIAX copper cable products in 1953, which eventually evolved into an industry standard for RF transmission lines in the broadcasting, radar, satellite, and wireless industries. Andrew has consistently focused on utility and reliability in its cable R&D as the fundamental requirements for energy efficiency and emission reduction solutions. Andrew’s HELIAX FXL was chosen for CNII’s gold award by a panel of technical experts.

Andrew has long played a significant role in the Chinese market, currently employing thousands of employees in multiple cities including Suzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen. The company recently provided solutions for numerous significant projects such as National Center for the Performing Arts, Beijing-to-Tianjin and Shijiazhuang-to-Taiyuan high speed railways, Beijing Subway and Shanghai Metro. Andrew’s long history of providing advanced wireless infrastructure solutions in China began in the early 1970s and has led to its establishment of solid, long term cooperative relationships with the major Chinese operators and OEMs. The company’s local manufacturing and research and development facilities provide extensive in-country capabilities for product design and production, a key factor in development of world-class products and on-time deliveries to Chinese customers.
