ARRIS ST-6000 significantly reduces overall operational and capital costs associated with delivering the multiscreen experiences that consumers crave

COLOGNE, Germany, June 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- ANGA COM 2013  –  German video service provider, ROPA Television, has selected the ST-6000 Series video transcoder from ARRIS Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARRS). ROPA selected the ST-6000 to deliver multichannel content to its customers while boosting bandwidth and reducing operational costs through high-channel density and transcoding efficiency.

The ST-6000 Series became part of the ARRIS portfolio through the company's acquisition of Motorola Home. ARRIS combines world-class solutions for the entire video delivery chain by integrating innovative technologies across the cloud, network and home.

The ST-6000 enables video service providers like ROPA to offer a broader range of high-quality video services to support evolving customer needs and headend requirements. The transcoder achieves this through video delivery in three, six or even 12 channel configurations.

Compared to single-channel transcoding solutions, the ST-6000 offers several key benefits:

  • Bandwidth savings (in 3, 6, or 12 channel configurations)
  • 80 percent reduction in power consumption
  • 90 percent savings in overall space requirements (1RU)
  • Video thumbnail generation

These benefits were key in ROPA's selection of the ST-6000, as the company sought a solution that would scale with its customers' growing performance requirements.

"Our service provider customers have discerning subscribers who want a selection of the latest content, in high-definition, on-demand," said Marco Zapf, CEO, ROPA Television. "We tested a number of solutions from a range of companies and identified the ARRIS ST-6000 as the solution that will best allow us to scale and provide Live-TV transcoding of SDTV and HDTV services, without incurring significant additional costs."

The ST-6000 defrays service provider costs through MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 decoding, which supports broadcast standards and legacy set-tops. As service providers look to increase their channel offerings and protect their estate, they can migrate channels from SD to HD video via software license, thereby avoiding costly hardware replacements. Additionally, the ST-6000 transcodes audio signals independently of video, resulting in bandwidth savings of up to 352kbps per video channel.

Steve McCaffery, EMEA General Manager at ARRIS, said, "The ST-6000 transcoder suits video providers who want to capitalize on their existing investments through innovation that drives efficiency. We recognize providers both large and small need to deliver carrier-class services whilst keeping capital and operational expenditure down. Our transcoder helps them achieve this while allowing them to increase quality and choice."
